Introduction: The "AGENTS of JOY"

Legend of the Traditional Himalayan

Since very ancient times the Felines (cat family) have held a special yet unlikely relationship with humans.  The "Big Cats" (felidae) are top-of-the-line land predators, each species is endowed with uniquely special qualities: Lions have strength and organization skills at the Pride (local family) level ; Leopards are masters at stealth, ambush, and climbing; Cheetahs are lean "speed machines" easily accelerating to speeds in excess of 60 mph with amazing agility.  The "small-cats" (felis) flourished for millions of years as "Wildcats" (felis silvestris), when humans began organizing the start of civilization these Wildcats began eating food discarded by human settlements.  Later, when humans began offering and Wildcats began accepting food, the first human-feline links developed over 7,000 years ago, probably near Egypt.  Eventually the Wildcats adapted to human presence and feeding, similarly Humans began adopting Wildcats as pets - creating the first "Domesticated Cats" (felis catus).

All Felines inherit enhanced senses, skills, and intelligence from their common ancestry, being much different than human perception this feline inheritance changed human perspective of "felis catus" to a status of special  spirit or mystical being.  This is especially true of distinctive felis that were adopted by ancient royalty and upper classes.  The bloodline decedents of these "Royal Cat" breeds provided the foundation for what we know today as pedigree domesticated cats.  The early Egyptians considered their Pharaohs to be god-kings and their Royal Cats as spiritual guides.  The Egyptians considered personal cats as partners in waking life and the regeneration cycle of sleep - they were also designated as guardians of the underworld.   The ancient empires of Persia and Siam designated Imperial status and protection to their domestic "Royal" felis.  Today they are known as the Persian and Siamese pedigree breeds, many other pedigree breeds have similar histories.

In the early twentieth century their was debate among veterinary scientists regarding biological and health degradation in pedigree bloodlines, including domestic dogs and cats.  With the (then) new science of genetics veterinary biologists developed a variety of research programs to explore these suspicions.  In one case regarding pedigree felines, two separate teams of researchers developed a coordinated plan for crossbreeding pedigree Persian and Siamese bloodlines.  They expected their results to verify the problem and indicate that a genetic solution to pedigree degradation may be possible, the experiment was a tremendous success with an unexpected bonus!

A wonderful result of the crossbreed was the introduction of an incredible breed of kitties with a healthy longer nosed doll-face, cuddly Persian body, beautiful Blue-eyes,  Siamese point-colors, and awesome personalities.   This surprising breed of extraordinary kitties became the legend of the Himalayans and is still the only official (CFA)  pedigree crossbreed.  Of all the wonderful breeds of domesticated cats the Himalayan is rated among the best as a feline with a sweet personality naturally suited for compatibility with humans and indoor lifestyles.

The term "Traditional" Himalayan refers to the longer nosed "doll-face" Himalayan which was a goal of the original crossbreed.  In the late 1990's the CFA moved the Himalayan breed under Persians, and the Pet Show Committee required Himalayan Show Cats to have the Persian "Pug-nose" extreme face for Show qualification, the Traditional Himalayan is considered pet quality.  Both pedigree Traditional and Pet Show Himalayans are (or can be) registered by the American CFA.
